What's on the MA CSL Exam? The Full Topic Breakdown
One of the most frustrating things about prepping for the Massachusetts CSL exam is that nobody gives you a straight, complete list of what's actually on it. You get vague answers like "the building code" or "general construction." Here's the real breakdown.
The big picture
The unrestricted CSL exam is 75 questions, open book, 4 hours, 70% to pass, built on the 10th edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code. The questions span across the entire code and related standards — not one narrow area. That breadth is the challenge: you can be an expert in your trade and still get blindsided by the sections outside it.
🏛️ MA Administrative & Licensing Rules
Permits, inspections, the supervisor's legal responsibilities, license rules, construction control, homeowner exemptions, and the 35,000 cubic foot threshold. High-value — purely MA-specific, and where national prep guides fail you.
🪵 Structural Framing
Joist and rafter spans, notching and boring limits, stud walls, headers, bearing vs. non-bearing, fastening schedules, load paths, platform vs. balloon framing. One of the largest single categories on the exam.
🔥 Fire Protection & Egress
Fire walls, fire barriers, fire-resistance ratings, fireblocking, smoke and CO alarms, sprinkler thresholds, exits, travel distances, corridor and stair widths. Together these make up a big slice of the test.
🏗️ Construction Types, Heights & Areas
IBC construction types I through V, allowable heights and areas, occupant load calculations, and required exit counts. These are table-navigation skills as much as knowledge.
🧱 Concrete, Masonry & Foundations
Concrete strength and curing, rebar cover, footings and frost depth, foundation walls, masonry bonds and mortar. Massachusetts frost depth (48 inches) shows up here regularly.
🌡️ Energy Efficiency & Stretch Code
Insulation, vapor barriers, air sealing, the IECC, and the Massachusetts Stretch Code (225 CMR) — blower-door testing, HERS ratings, balanced ventilation, EV-ready requirements. Heavily MA-specific.

Fall protection, scaffolds, ladders, excavation and trench safety, PPE, hazard communication, and supervisor responsibilities on a multi-employer site.
📐 Plan Reading, Estimating & More
Drawing conventions, material takeoffs (board feet, concrete yardage, stud counts), roofing, moisture protection, accessibility, and basic mechanical/electrical concepts.
