MA CSL Exam: Passing Score, Format & Rules

The format at a glance

Passing score: 70%

You need 70% to pass — 53 of 75 questions correct. That means you can miss 22 and still walk out licensed. The margin is workable, but it disappears fast if you're spending five minutes per question hunting through your code books. Speed matters.

It's open book — but read this carefully

The MA CSL exam is open book, which is the single most misunderstood thing about it. Most people hear "open book" and assume that means easy. It doesn't. What it actually means:

• You may bring approved reference materials. Check PSI's candidate bulletin for the exact allowed list.
• You bring your own books — the test center provides nothing.
• Your references may be tabbed and highlighted in advance — and they absolutely should be.

What to bring on test day

• Your tabbed, highlighted reference books (per the current PSI candidate bulletin)
• Acceptable photo ID
• Your exam confirmation/registration details

Confirm the current allowed-materials list and ID requirements directly with PSI before test day — these details are set by PSI and can change.

The 10th edition matters

As of January 1, 2025, testing is based on the 10th edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code, and administration moved to PSI. Make sure every piece of study material — and every code book you bring — is 10th edition. Using older material is a common, avoidable way to lose points, especially on the Massachusetts amendments.
